Flora given the gift of safety
Flora, a ten-month-old hinny – which is the result of a horse stallion mating with a female donkey – had been abandoned in an unsecure field and was extremely frightened.
With only a sparse line of trees separating Flora from the nearby road, we later learned that she had already escaped several times, not only endangering herself but causing potential danger to passing drivers.
Donkey Welfare Advisers Eva Ellis and Vivienne Kenny travelled to Flora’s location in Dublin. Right away, it was clear that the hinny was panicked and under a great deal of stress, and they knew they would face significant challenges during her rescue.
Eva says: “It was imperative to move quickly, both for the sake of Flora and to reduce the potential of a major incident on the nearby, busy road.
“We contacted My Lovely Horse Rescue who quickly responded and arrived in their horse box to transport Flora to safety.
“It was very difficult to catch Flora in the open space. She was understandably fearful, so she had to be approached with a calm and relaxed mindset.”
Flora was safely loaded and transported to My Lovely Horse Rescue six hours later, and everyone was relieved to know she was heading for a much a brighter future.
Six months later, we’re delighted to share that Flora is living a peaceful life in a wonderful foster home while the search continues for her new family.
Thanks to supporters like you and collaboration with other equine charities, we are able to continue helping hinnies, donkeys and mules in urgent need.
